Kaufman’s ’70s remake is funnier and much more self-mindful. Even though the initial Film was (determined by who you suspect) an assessment of possibly McCarthyist conformity or encroaching communism, the remake usually takes matters into weirder, more oblique territory, lampooning the fallout in the ’60s perfect with its lentils-and-beansp
